Recently UPS employees working in three UPS locations in the United States and Mexico met with senior management who also started at these respective locations. The goal of these UPS employees? To find out what makes these highly successful persons in senior management tick, so that maybe they too can enjoy the same success at UPS

What brought you to UPS, like why did you choose UPS? When I came here I saw that the job was physical and I wanted to stay in shape. You know when you are delivering, you have a 135 stops or whatever is on your vehicle. The people really, really surprised me. I knew the job was going to be tough, it was going to be physical but I never thought I would meet so wonderful people at UPS.

What surprised you most when you started working at UPS? I was amazed by the size of the company that I was joining. All that movement of airplanes coming in, everything running like a clock. And the fact that the business was run like that I was really amazed.

What has kept you here at UPS so long? That is a very interesting question. The culture here is unique because we have a promotion from within policy. And the upward mobility opportunities that existed during my career, still exist today. UPS is a global organization that has been in business for over a 100 years. And it's a growing business so we are going to be here for a long time and you can enjoy a great career.

What challenges do UPSers face in 2011? The challenge is always our competition but we can overcome that by our value added proposition to customers. We do it better than our competition. It's making sure that we have the value added, you are one of them. When I sit in front of customers, I always talk about our service providers. Our service providers are the best in the industry.

Are there mentors who helped you in your career at UPS? Yes I have always the opportunity to work for very good people. Many people have helped me to develop my professional skills, to understand UPS better. They believed that I could do it and finally being able to deliver the results is one of the things that I appreciate the most.

Have you been involved in any special or interesting projects at UPS? I have. We had a special project involving what is now known as a smart label on the package. That is a system that would allow our customers to supply us with information via package level detail. That told us what was in the package, where it was going. We were able to complete the project in less than a year, so I'm very proud of that accomplishment.

What about the importance of diversity at UPS and some of the programs that they provide? Diversity is very very important, you get different thoughts, you get different points view. Diversity really is what makes a great company be even greater and that is where we are at UPS.

What advice would you give to women, working at UPS? I would tell them that they have huge opportunities going into the future. I think that the most important thing that you need to understand is that you need to believe in yourself, you need to love what you do with all your heart.

What is the most compelling reason to join UPS? I think the most compelling reason to join UPS is that we're a very stable but growth oriented organization. We're a one hundred year old company that still acts with an entrepreneurial spirit, has a great culture of promotion from within. It's a great organization to be a part of.
